The curves of Art Nouveau challenged industrial production; the Bauhaus sought to reconcile art and technology; Memphis rebelled against modern solemnity, and skeuomorphism taught millions of people how to touch a screen. More than a succession of trends, the history of design is a record of our fears, desires, and ways of understanding progress.
In 1982, Blade Runner imagined Los Angeles as a city dominated by corporations, neon signs, and technology as advanced as it was decadent. More than four decades later, that visual warning reappears in video game computers, cryptocurrency campaigns, and neon-lit restaurants.
Something similar happened with the Memphis of the 1980s. It was born as a provocation against serious, functionalist design, but its colors, geometric shapes, and patterns ended up in clothing, music videos, interfaces, and corporate advertising. Even the fake leather and shiny buttons of the first iPhones, banished during the flat design craze, are returning transformed into transparencies, volume, and digital surfaces.
None of this is by chance. Visual styles do not appear in isolation: they respond to wars, economic crises, technological advances, cultural changes, and new ways of living. A movement may begin in a school, a film, or a group of designers, but it becomes influential when it manages to express something many people already feel.
Design, therefore, not only decides how an object looks. It also communicates what future seems desirable, who has access to it, and what role technology, nature, and people occupy within that world.

Each design movement is a visual response to a historical question: should we resist the machine, learn to live with it, or use it to build a different world?

When the machine changed the idea of beauty
Art Nouveau: returning nature to the industrial city
At the end of the 19th century, Europe was transformed by factories, railways, and mass production. Against that new uniformity appeared Art Nouveau, recognizable by its flowing lines, female figures, flowers, insects, and structures inspired by stems and branches.
The Paris metro entrances designed by Hector Guimard looked like organisms growing from the sidewalk. Alfons Mucha’s posters turned advertising into an ornamental composition. In Barcelona, Antoni Gaudí brought organic forms to buildings whose facades seemed to be in motion.
It was not an identical style everywhere. It received names like Modernisme in Catalonia, Jugendstil in Germany and Sezessionstil in Austria. The best-known name comes from Siegfried Bing's Parisian shop, L'Art Nouveau, opened in 1895, according to the design history of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
His big bet was to erase the boundary between fine arts and applied arts. A lamp, a poster, or the entrance to a station could have the same artistic value as a painting. That ambition to integrate art and life would reappear decades later in the Bauhaus and, with different priorities, in solarpunk.

Art Déco: turning industry into spectacle
If Art Nouveau looked to plants, Art Déco looked to machines. During the 1920s and 1930s, geometry, symmetry, shiny metals, and luxurious materials built an image of speed and sophistication.
New York's Chrysler Building summed up that promise: a skyscraper topped with stainless steel, as monumental as a car emblem. Radios, trains, jewelry, posters, and movie theaters adopted stepped lines, sun rays, and aerodynamic shapes.
The style reached a decisive point at the 1925 International Exhibition of Decorative Arts and Modern Industries in Paris. Afterwards, the Great Depression made its taste for expensive materials seem increasingly incompatible with economic reality. The Metropolitan Museum of Art precisely places part of its decline during the 1930s in that tension.
Art Déco did not reject industry: it dressed it up. Its future was vertical, geometric, and shiny.

Currently: hotels, luxury identities, and fictions like BioShock o The Great Gatsby.

The grid promised clarity; matter and color reminded us that order is also contested.
Modernity sought to impose order
Bauhaus: designing a new everyday life
The Bauhaus opened in Weimar in 1919, when Germany was trying to rebuild after World War I. Walter Gropius brought together art, architecture, craftsmanship, and technology under one school. The goal was not to create a recognizable decoration, but to experiment with a new way of living and producing.
Workshops in metal, textiles, typography, photography, and furniture explored how to make useful objects with the materials and processes of the time. Marcel Breuer’s B3 chair — later known as the Wassily chair — used bent steel tubing; Marianne Brandt’s teapot turned basic geometric shapes into a household object.
The Bauhaus was not a fixed formula either. It changed city, leadership, and political orientation. It was closed in 1933 under pressure from the Nazi regime. Teachers and students emigrated and took their ideas to Europe and America, spreading an influence that the Museum of Modern Art describes as decisive for our visual world.
The phrase “form follows function” is often attributed to it, but the statement was originally made by American architect Louis Sullivan. The Bauhaus turned it, more than into a slogan, into a practical discussion: how should design respond to technology, production, and social needs?

International Typographic Style: clarity for a connected world
In 1950s and 1960s Switzerland, designers like Josef Müller-Brockmann, Armin Hofmann, and Emil Ruder consolidated a language based on grids, photography, white space, and sans serif typefaces. It is known as Swiss Style or International Typographic Style.
Its aspiration was to reduce noise and organize information with consistency. That logic worked especially well for cultural posters, transportation systems, and corporate identities that needed to communicate across multiple countries.
Helvetica, designed by Max Miedinger and Eduard Hoffmann in 1957, became its most popular symbol, although the movement was much broader than a single typeface. Its legacy can be seen in subway maps, airport signage, newspapers, government websites, and practically any interface built on a grid.
Neutrality, however, is never absolute. Deciding which information takes up more space, what is omitted, and what is presented as normal is also a way of exercising editorial power.
Mid-century modern: making progress livable
In the postwar era, the future entered the home. Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, Florence Knoll, and other designers combined new industrial processes with wood, leather, fiberglass, and organic shapes.
The result was a less severe modernity: houses open to the landscape, lightweight furniture, and products designed for a transforming domestic life. The mid-century modern promised that technology could be comfortable, accessible, and optimistic.
Its permanence is visible in furniture reissues, Scandinavian influence, IKEA, and the interiors that now circulate on social media. It is one of the clearest examples of a style that stopped belonging to an era to become synonymous with “modern classic.”
Brutalism: showing structure without apologies
Brutalism did the opposite: it exposed weight, scale, and materials. The term relates to the French expression béton brut, raw concrete, and is associated with buildings of large volumes, exposed structures, and a monumental presence.
In projects like London’s Barbican Centre or Montreal’s Habitat 67, that rawness was linked to cultural programs, collective housing, and urban reconstruction. Over time, the style was admired for its honesty and criticized for its harshness or the deterioration of some buildings.
The internet revived its attitude under the name web brutalism: pages that show links, borders, typography, and structure without trying to hide them behind a polished experience. It is not a literal translation of the architectural movement, but it shares the gesture of exposing the material the medium is made of.
Memphis: the rebellion that ended up becoming a trend
Milan, 1981. An international group led by Ettore Sottsass presented furniture in intense colors, plastic laminates, irregular patterns, and shapes that looked like they came out of a comic strip. The first Memphis collection challenged decades of modernist sobriety.
The Carlton shelving unit could function as furniture, a divider, or a sculpture. The Tahiti lamp had a beak, neck, and personality of a mechanical animal. The objects were deliberately ambiguous: useful, decorative, ironic, and commercial at the same time.
The group combined high and low culture, cheap materials, and limited production. The Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum highlights precisely that mix in Carlton’s history. Memphis did not intend to be “bad design”; it questioned who decided what good taste was.
The collective dissolved in 1988, but its vocabulary survived. It can be traced in the graphics of the eighties and nineties, on Nickelodeon, MTV, fashion, postmodern interiors, and in the return of geometric patterns during the 2010s.
The irony came later: an aesthetic born against corporate functionalism would end up providing part of the visual language with which tech companies tried to appear casual and human.

From fake wood to flat surfaces
Skeuomorphism: showing the digital through familiar objects
Before a folder was an icon, it was a cardboard folder. Before “cut” and “paste” were commands, they were physical actions. Graphical interfaces adopted desktop metaphors from the earliest personal computers to explain an unfamiliar environment.
That strategy is known as skeuomorphism or skeuomorphism: preserving in a new object features associated with an earlier one, even if they are no longer necessary for its function. In interfaces, the concept usually refers to calculators that look like calculators, digital libraries with wooden shelves, and buttons with gloss, relief, and shadow.
Apple turned it into a mass language during the early years of the iPhone and iPad. Notes looked like a yellow notepad; iBooks, a library; Game Center, a game table. The textures were not just ornamental: they helped communicate what each app did to people learning to interact with touchscreens.
But familiarity also ages. When millions of users already understood digital gestures and patterns, stitched leather and simulated wood began to feel excessive. In 2013, iOS 7, under Jony Ive’s design direction, reduced textures, reliefs, and literal references.
Skeuomorphism did not die. Switches, knobs, shadows, and animations continue to take cues from the physical world. What lost relevance was its more decorative version.
Flat design: the screen stops pretending to be something else
Microsoft took a radical interpretation of flat design to Windows Phone and then Windows 8 through the language then known as Metro: large areas of color, prominent typography, simple icons, and few depth effects. Apple followed a different path, but the iOS 7 redesign consolidated the trend.
The Flat Design had obvious advantages. It was flexible, scalable, and suitable for different resolutions. Additionally, it stopped treating the screen as an imitation of paper, metal, or leather.
The problem arose when the cleanliness also removed interaction cues. If a button looked the same as a label, the user had to guess where to tap. Nielsen Norman Group documented this loss of visual indicators and described how some flat designs reduced efficiency and increased uncertainty; their recommendation was not to return to fake leather, but to clearly differentiate interactive elements. The response was what some specialists called Flat 2.0: still clean interfaces, but with enough shadows, layers, color, and movement to explain their functionality.
Material Design: inventing a physics for the screen
Google introduced Material Design in 2014. Instead of copying real objects, it proposed a digital material initially inspired by paper: surfaces that could be stacked, scrolled, cast shadows, and respond to touch.
The team made icons and compositions with real paper to study lights, shadows, and movements. That research became shared rules for apps, web, and Android. Google explains this origin in its retrospective on the launch of Material Design.
Over time, the system became more flexible. Material 2 expanded customization possibilities and Material 3 incorporated dynamic color and more expressive components. The evolution shows that a design system is not a frozen style: it is an agreement that must adapt to new screens, brands, and accessibility needs.

Corporate Memphis: optimism made in vectors
During the second half of the 2010s, tech companies filled their products and campaigns with characters with long arms, disproportionate bodies, flat colors, and minimal faces. The style became known as Corporate Memphis.
It is not an official continuation of the Italian group. The name is critical and alludes to a superficial resemblance: geometry, color, and playfulness. An important influence was Alegria, the illustration system created by BUCK for Facebook in 2017. Its intention was to represent diversity and closeness through non-realistic characters.
Vector illustrations offered practical advantages: they could adapt to any size, explain abstract functions, and avoid the cost or limitations of a photo shoot. That efficiency caused the style to spread until different companies became visual neighbors.
The criticism is not only directed at their elastic arms. As noted by WIRED in its analysis of Corporate Memphis, these scenes often present a friendly, collaborative, and conflict-free world, even when depicting companies involved in debates about privacy, labor, or concentration of power.
Corporate Memphis reveals a recurring paradox: the market can absorb the language of rebellion, remove its friction, and return it transformed into corporate identity.
Bento UI: organizing the overload
The so-called Bento UI organizes information into cards of different sizes, like the compartments of a Japanese bento box. It became popular in portfolios, product pages, and dashboards during the early 2020s.
It’s best to treat it as a composition trend, not as a historical movement comparable to Bauhaus or Memphis. Its roots lie in control panels, modular grids, interface cards, and widgets. Apple, Microsoft, and numerous tech sites helped make it familiar, but there is no single founding moment.
Its success responds to a contemporary need: to show many pieces of information without turning the screen into an endless list. Each block can contain a figure, function, image, or demonstration. Well used, it creates hierarchy; poorly used, it turns any content into a collection of interchangeable rounded boxes.

Optimism becomes design only when it changes the material conditions of daily life.
The futures that never existed also design the present
The currents ending in -punk were not necessarily born in design studios. Many emerged from literature, film, illustration, and video games. Still, they have influenced fashion, architecture, products, and interfaces because they offer complete worlds: each imagines who controls technology, what energy drives society, and what relationship exists between progress and power.
Cyberpunk: high tech, precarious lives
Cyberpunk brought together dense cities, omnipresent corporations, hackers, implants, and inequality. Its formula is often summed up as “high tech and low life”: extraordinary advances without an equivalent improvement in collective life.
Bruce Bethke used Cyberpunk as the title of a story written in 1980 and published in 1983. William Gibson, Bruce Sterling, Pat Cadigan, and other authors consolidated the genre. Neuromancer (1984) gave it its most influential literary language, while Blade Runner (1982), Akira (1988), Ghost in the Shell (1995) and The Matrix (1999) built part of its visual imagery.
Neon is its most imitated feature, but not its most important idea. Cyberpunk asks what happens when technological power grows faster than rights, democracy, or the ability to control it.
Steampunk: rewriting the industrial revolution
Steampunk imagines extraordinary technologies within an alternative 19th century: steam engines, airships, brass, visible mechanisms, and mechanical computing. K. W. Jeter coined the term in a letter published by Locus in 1987, in analogy with cyberpunk, as recorded by The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction in its entry on steampunk.
Its appeal does not depend on historical accuracy. It arises from the contrast between complex machinery and handcrafted manufacturing. The mechanism is not hidden: it becomes decoration, narrative, and identity.
Atompunk and dieselpunk: nostalgia with a historical shadow
Atompunk is a retrospective label for futures inspired by the atomic era, especially between 1945 and the mid-sixties. Rockets, domestic robots, rounded shapes, and colorful appliances promise scientific abundance, while nuclear war remains a threat.
The 1958 Ford Nucleon — a conceptual, never functional car — sums up that imagination: a future in which even a family vehicle could rely on nuclear energy. Fallout uses that aesthetic to show the gap between optimistic propaganda and its consequences.
El dieselpunk looks at the decades from the 1920s to the 1950s and exaggerates engines, aviation, industry, propaganda, and war machinery. It is heavier and darker than steampunk. Both are alternative pasts created from the present; not names that people from those times used to describe themselves.
Solarpunk: imagining a future worth building
Solarpunk was born as a response to the saturation of dystopias. It imagines renewable energy, green cities, repair, community autonomy, and technologies serving everyday life. Its future is not a jungle that replaced civilization, but a society that learned to integrate infrastructure and ecosystems.
The term appeared in 2008 in an anonymous publication titled From Steampunk to Solarpunk. In 2014, Adam Flynn helped articulate the movement in Solarpunk: Notes toward a manifesto. Its definition insisted on leveraging, repairing, and transforming what already exists, instead of imagining that everything can be demolished and started from scratch.
Visually, solarpunk recovers curves and vegetation from Art Nouveau, the craft ethics of Arts and Crafts, and current technologies like solar panels, urban agriculture, and water harvesting systems. Politically, its “punk” appears in decentralization, community work, and the question of who controls infrastructure.
Its main risk is becoming greenwashing: facades covered with plants and bright renders without material changes in energy, housing, or inequality. The challenge of solarpunk is to prove that its optimism can be a method and not just a color palette.

Styles do not disappear: they remix, shift context, and return with another meaning.
A chronology made of advances and reactions
The sequence is not linear. Bauhaus and Art Déco coexisted; skeuomorphism never completely disappeared; brutalism returned on the web; Memphis was rescued by generations who did not live its birth. Styles are not replaced like software versions: they remain available and acquire new meanings.

Art Nouveau appears when the industrial city begins to feel too mechanical. Its response was not to deny modernity, but to envelop it with organic lines, vegetal ornament, and an idea of beauty applied to posters, objects, interiors, and architecture.
The next style is already among us
Design history is often told as a series of labels: Art Nouveau, Bauhaus, Memphis, skeuomorphism, flat design. But those words consolidate later. First, scattered signals appear: new materials, technologies changing in price, behaviors becoming everyday, and a shared discomfort with the previous aesthetic.
In 2026, several forces compete to define the next stage. Artificial intelligence can multiply images and personalize interfaces, but it also risks homogenizing them. The climate crisis drives materials, services, and narratives of repair. Screens seek greater depth and movement after years of flat minimalism. At the same time, nostalgia recovers pixels, transparencies, liquid metal, and textures from the early digital decades.
The next big trend will probably not come from a single company nor have an immediate name. It will be the visual response to a tension we already live with: we want more powerful technology, but also more understandable; personalized experiences, but not invasive; optimistic futures, but not naive.
Art Nouveau sought to reconcile art and life. Bauhaus, art and industry. Skeuomorphism, objects and screens. Solarpunk tries to reconcile technology and nature. Each era changes the terms but keeps the same ambition: to give visible shape to the world that does not yet exist.
